Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s (MBS) Vision 2030 prides itself on offering “world-class entertainment” and says that it has organized up to 3,800 entertainment events in the country, attended by more than 80 million people.
Electronic music, strobe lights, glittered faces and hundreds of thousands of people in mixed-gender gyrations are all part of a new kind of ritual in Saudi Arabia that didn’t exist just three years ago.
Along the same line, MBS has recently launched the Acting and Singing Academy project in Riyadh, with a cost of 86 billion riyals.
The project includes a theater with a capacity of 2,500 seats, five indoor theaters, and an outdoor theater that can accommodate 8,000 viewers, in addition to a cinema complex that includes three halls.
The project is directly supervised by the Crown Prince along with his closest man, Turki Al Sheikh, head of the Entertainment Authority.
Sources familiar with the matter earlier revealed that MBS has ambitious plans to create a city dedicated to space exploration, known as the “Science Fiction Space City” or “Mars War.”
The initial phase of this project is expected to cost 5 billion Saudi riyals, which is approximately equivalent to 1.3 billion dollars. However, the total cost could potentially surpass 20 billion riyals in its final phase.
During the “Taif Investment Forum” held in the Taif region of Saudi Arabia, investment contracts worth more than 11 billion riyals, equivalent to 2.9 billion dollars, were inked.
One of the prominent investments included the collaborative establishment of the “Science Fiction Space City” with the Chinese Beijing Technology Group.
Well-informed sources earlier confirmed that MBS intends to establish a city for media and film production, similar to Hollywood.
The Media Production City project includes film and series production at a cost of more than $300 billion.
MBS intends to attract Hollywood celebrities to the Kingdom in order to polish his foreign image.
The sources pointed out that MBS is looking to invest billions of dollars into Hollywood movies and entertainment.
It has already spent billions of dollars to start up a new golf league, invested billions more in video-game publishers, and is now turning its attention to Hollywood, the sources said.
The presence of famous people on Saudi soil at a film festival lends credibility to those efforts, even if the organizers didn’t get all the biggest stars to show up.
The country is also offering generous incentives to filmmakers and studios if they shoot there, and these incentives have already enticed a couple of productions, including a film starring Anthony Mackie.
Saudi Arabia’s Cultural Development Fund is poised to launch a new $233m ($879m Saudi Riyal) film industry financing program in the first quarter of 2023, which will be open to both local and international entities.
The new fund joins a raft of initiatives introduced by the Saudi Arabian government to support the building of a film and TV sector in the wake of the lifting of the country’s 35-cinema ban at the end of 2017.
According to the sources, the move was part of a wider strategy to open up the country and move its economy away from a reliance on oil. Other key supports include a 40% rebate for production.
